BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY

The Blue Ridge Parkway is the most beautiful and most traveled Parkway in America, spanning 469 miles from the Shenandoah Valley to the great Smoky Mountains. This is a MUST SEE while you are visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains!  It is only about 30 minutes away from the cabins.

MT. AIRY, NC (MAYBERRY)

The birthplace of actor Andy Griffith, and the town that inspired his famous TV show along with the follow-up Mayberry RFD, is only about 40 minutes from the cabins. If you visit on Saturday morning, the local musicians come to town and play for free at the original downtown movie theater. Radio station WPAQ has been broadcasting this weekly event for decades on the "Merry Go Round" show and it is said to be the longest-running live radio show, even longer than the Grand Ole Opry! Grab a pork chop sandwich at Snappy's Grill and visit Floyd's Barber Shop.  And if you're a real fan of the show, don't miss The Andy Griffith Museum and Playhouse.

PILOT MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

Andy Griffith referred to it on his TV show as "Mt. Pilot". You can actually see Pilot Mountain from our cabin even though it's over 50 miles away! A great state park for hiking, it is only a short 15 minute drive from Mt. Airy. If you have time, I highly recommend that you visit this park and hike around the knob of the mountain. It has a feel of walking around a giant castle and there are spectacular views.

SKI BEECH & SUGAR MOUNTAIN

Great skiing awaits you at the Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain Ski resorts. Both are located in the quaint mountain town of Banner Elk, home to a number of outstanding dining & entertainment options.

STONE MOUNTAIN GOLF COURSE

Bored with the standard cookie-cutter layout of most courses? What will you remember most about Stone Mountain Golf Course? The scenery, the greens, and the uniqueness of each one of the holes. Stone Mountain provides you with the best value golf on earth - a quality golf course with beautiful greens and incredibly low greens fees. There are 4 other golf courses within a 30 minute drive from here but I believe that, Stone Mountain Golf offers the best scenery and value of any golf course in America! And it is only a short
eight-minutes drive from our cabins.

TWEETSIE RAILROAD

Located near Boone and Blowing Rock NC. This is a great theme park that features a real coal fired locomotive train! Spend an entire day with the kids or grandkids. Features a chairlift to more rides and attractions at the top of the mountain. About 55 minutes from the cabins.

GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN

Developed by the Morton family, Grandfather Mountain is now owned by the state of NC. Walk across the famous "Mile High Swinging Bridge". Be sure to visit the wildlife habitat. Located about 45 minutes from the cabins. A MUST SEE place in the Blue Ridge Mountains!

BLOWING ROCK

From the unmatched, far-reaching views along the Blue Ridge Parkway, to the quaint storybook mountain village, Blowing Rock, North Carolina is truly deserving of the title: "Crown of the Blue Ridge." LOVE VALLEY, NC

Nestled in the foothills of the Brushy Mountains just north of Statesville, NC, Love Valley is a town all its own, away from the hustle of the city life. There, surprisingly you will find the leisurely atmosphere of an old western community. Love Valley's downtown invites visitors to ride into town on the dirt road, hitch their horses to the hitching rails, stroll along the boardwalk and shop at the country store, tack shop, gift shop, general store, hardware store, or the blacksmith shop. There are also restaurants, saloons, and various other businesses.

NEW RIVER CANOEING

Some geologists believe the New River to be one of the oldest rivers in the world, somewhere between 10 million and 360 million years old, and second in age only to the Nile River in Egypt. It's unusual northerly directional flow indicates it likely existed even before the formation of the Blue Ridge Mountains themselves. A host of area facilities offer opportunities for canoeing, kayaking and tubing along this historic river, which actually flows north out of North Carolina.

HOME OF ENG & CHANG

The original Siamese Twins, Eng and Chang, toured the world as a curiosity act an made plenty of money. When they eventually tired of that life, they befriended a young doctor from Wilkesboro, NC named James Calloway, whom they met in New York. He convinced them to return home with him. They moved to Traphill, NC and eventually opened a general store. They married two local sisters and had 21 children between them. When Eng died, Chang died an hour later. They were buried near Mt. Airy, NC. Their home place is located on Long Bottom Road, just a short distance from the back entrance of Stone Mountain State Park. The house is not open to the public but, you can drive by to see it. It is the large white house sitting back off the road, to the left of the Old Roaring River Baptist Church. A very historic site to see.

BOONE, NC

The town of Boone, is the seat of Watauga County and home to Appalachian State University. Named for famous pioneer and explorer, Daniel Boone. the incorporated in 1872 and now has reached a population of 20,000 people. Despite its size, Boone still maintains a small town feel, particularly in the quaint downtown area, which boasts a host of outstanding restaurants and unique shops.
With the Blue Ridge Parkway brushing close by and loaded with outdoor activity suppliers, Boone also serves as ad hoc capital city of the Blue Ridge Mountains. 

SPARTA, NC

Sparta is a short, pleasant drive away, with an old-fashioned hardware store that has just about anything you could need or want. Great gift shops too! On Saturday night there is little theater on main street that puts on a great show of country and bluegrass music. Do a little square dancing while you are there.
